Young:
"Burn went nominal."

Capcom Joe Allen:
"Okay, John, we copied the shortest of all burn reports."

Young:
"Whoever said space is black is right. It's really black. It's awfully quite down there."

After the 16-minute "loss of signal" period, Young's voice was heard over the radio,

"Hello, Houston. Columbia's here. We're doing Mach ten-point-three at one eighty-eight."

Loss of signal occurs because of an electrically charged field which surrounds the ship during reentry. The high temperatures experienced by the ship ionize the air to create this envelope which blocks radio signals. During reentry, the wing leading edge will reach temperatures of 2750 degrees Fahrenheit.
