"The Columbia climbed on a column of white contrail and spewed a tail of fire four times its own length. Then it slowly rolled over on its back and was soon out of sight, leaving behind wide grins, shrieks of joy and tears of happiness."
Michael Boelke, "Astronomy," August 1981

Although the exact heart rates of Young and Crippen during liftoff vary according to the source, they average out about the same: Crippen with a rate of about 130, Young with a rate of about 80.

Houston's explanation:
"John has been there before."

Young's explanation:
"I was just so old my heart wouldn't go any faster."

Neil B. Hutchinson's (flight director) explanation:
"John was kind of asleep at liftoff."
