Columbia prior to launch
|
Originally scheduled to be launched
on April 10, STS-1 was delayed because of several problems, including malfunctioning
fuel cells and computers.
The shuttle contains five computers;
four of the computers are used simultaneously during launch and re-entry,
with the fifth being used as a backup. The fifth computer is also used
while in orbit. All four of the launch/re-entry computers must agree in
their responses. If there are any discrepancies, the fifth computer will
be used as the backup. The delay in the first attempt at launching STS-1
was caused by a delay of 40 milliseconds when the number five computer
was scheduled to come on line to support the other four onboard computers.
