Gassendi crater |
Young, describing the central peak of Tsiolkovsky Crater:
"...a white marshmallow in a sea of hot chocolate." |
Because of back-up control system
problems, the Apollo 16 lunar landing was almost aborted. Engineers on
the ground determined that the problem wasn't serious enough to prevent
landing.
"...a cliff-hanger of a mission from where we were sitting in the cockpit; but the ground came through...with a couple of clutch hits and put us right back in the ball game. I know there was a lot of work being done on the ground, and, speaking for the flight crew, we certainly appreciate it." John Young, post-mission press conference, 5-3-72 |

"I know of one case where the
engineering team had already started to work out in California on the problem
while we were still discussing it with Houston control. This, to me, is
indicative of team members who have a deep sense of individual responsibility.
It is this sense of individual responsibility that built our reliable spacecraft,
solved our real-time problems, and makes the United States of America the
greatest country on this earth."
John Young, speaking to Congress after the mission, 5-16-72 |
