Apollo 16 Crew Ends Tour
NASA Activities - August 25, 1972In less than six weeks during May, June and July, the members of the Apollo 16 crew - Astronauts John W. Young, Thomas K. Mattingly, II, and Charles M. Duke, Jr. - made 134 appearances in 36 cities in 20 states before audiences totaling 128,000 persons.
Their conviction at the end of the tour was that "the majority of Americans are still with us and are amazed to learn how little we actually spend on our program."
In summarizing their experiences, Gene Marianetti, Astronaut Affairs Officer for NASA, reported:
"No crew in the Apollo program did more to inform and educate the American people of the importance of continuing with the exploration of outer space... In my opinion, it was a most worthwhile effort and by far the most successful domestic post-flight appearance scheduling we have undertaken... The three astronauts are a credit to this agency and to this country."The crew appearances were made in the following cities:
Houston, TX; Washington, DC; Chicago, IL; Cape Kennedy, FL; Orlando, FL; Hialeah, FL; Charlotte, NC; Lancaster, SC; Columbia, SC; St. Louis, MO; Twin Cities, MN; Hartford, CT; Bridgeport, CT; New York, NY; Boston, MA; Lowell, MA; Springfield, MA; New Brunswick, NJ; Louisville, KY; Knoxville, TN; Scranton, PA; Indianapolis, IN; Green Bay/Ashwaubenon, WI; Huntsville, AL; Los Angeles, CA; Pasadena, CA; Edwards, CA; Moffett Field, CA; San Francisco, CA; Portland, OR; Kalispell, MT; and Seattle, WA.
