The first and only time thus far that all sixteen US astronauts trained together was at a jungle survival exercise in the wild back country of Panama. This rare photograph, the first taken of the entire group informally, was shot at Panama City. From left: James A. McDivitt, Leroy G. Cooper, Walter M. Schirra, Alan B. Shepard, Elliot M. See, Virgil I. Grissom, Frank Borman, Malcom S. Carpenter, Thomas B. Stafford, Edward H. White, John H. Glenn, Jr., James A. Lovell, Jr., Charles Conrad, Jr., Donald K. Slayton, Neil A. Armstrong and John W. Young. The sixteen astronauts are rarely photographed together (this is only the second occasion) because they spend an average of 237 days a year away from home on training missions, attending scientific and technical meetings, and visiting manufacturers. John Glenn, for instance, spent 262 days away from home during the year following his orbital flight.
