U.S. Navy personnel greet the Apollo 16 Astronauts after their splashdown and recovery today, 11 days after the start of their lunar landing mission began at the Kennedy Space Center. The Astronauts, l-r, Thomas K. Mattingly II, Charles M. Duke, Jr., and Johnn W. Young splashed down on target at 2:45pm EST, 2,778 kilometers (1,500 nautical miles) south of Hawaii, about 1 1/2 kilometers (1 nautical mile) from the prime recovery vessel.
